Located in the southwest of the municipality of Sfântu Gheorghe, approximately 500 meters from the central area, the National College "Mihai Viteazul" operates in one of the most beautiful and representative buildings of the city. The image of this building is frequently included in albums, calendars and leaflets produced by the City Hall, being considered a local symbol.
The old school building was built between 1908 and 1910, on the site of a former brewery that had been demolished, with its initial purpose being pedagogical education. Over time, several auxiliary buildings were added to the school complex, including a boarding school, a celebration hall, a gym, a cafeteria, a workshop and the school library.
Our institution keeps alive the tradition of pedagogical education from the interwar period, but also that of secondary and high school education from the period after the Second World War. On October 20, 1918, the courses of the "Regina Maria" Teacher Training School were inaugurated. The role of this school was clearly defined in the documents of the time and in the press of the time, the main purpose being the promotion of the Romanian language, history and culture, as well as the comprehensive training of future teachers. Out of the desire to preserve the memory of that period, it was considered important to publish the yearbook of the "Regina Maria" Teacher Training School from the school year 1923-1924, along with photographs of the class of 1933-1934.
Over the decades, the name of the institution has undergone several changes, depending on the social and political context of the time and the guidelines of the education system established by the authorities. Thus, after the Second World War, the school operated under various titles: Middle School No. 2, High School No. 2, Real-Humanist High School, Philology-History High School, Industrial High School No. 2, and later the “Mihai Viteazul” High School. Starting with November 13, 2001, the institution is called the “Mihai Viteazul” National College.
Currently, the educational unit is the only theoretical high school with the Romanian language of instruction in the municipality of Sfântu Gheorghe.
The current structure of the school includes three levels of education: primary, middle school and high school. The presence of these cycles allows for ensuring educational continuity, establishing natural links between the stages of development of the students and the cultural accumulations specific to each level.
