The “Liviu Rebreanu” National College in Bistrița currently operates in the building that once housed the Lutheran gymnasium for boys.
As the end of the 19th century approached, the study space offered by the Evangelical Gymnasium located in the center of Bistrița became increasingly insufficient in relation to the growing educational demands of the community. Thus, the idea of erecting a new building for the gymnasium began to be considered by the local authorities. Finally, the old building of the Evangelical Gymnasium was sold to the state by the Evangelical Parish of Bistrița on October 7, 1900, for the sum of 120,000 crowns. It was decided to purchase a plot of land located on the current Boulevard of the Republic, known at that time as Butchers Street, for the construction of the new building. The land was rectangular, with a street opening of 192 meters, bordered by the old cattle market on a length of 209 meters and a depth of 230 meters.
At that time, the director of the gymnasium, Georg Fischer, initiated a fundraising campaign to support the start of construction work, appealing mainly to the support of students and teachers. By 1901, the amount collected from donations reached 44,237 crowns.
Between 1914 and 1929, the management of the high school was taken over by the history teacher Albert Berger, born in 1864 and died in 1936.
Between 1891 and 1910, Gustav Kisch held the position of German language teacher at the high school. Later, he would become the head of the German language and literature department at the University of Cluj. Among the institution's former students were important personalities such as Alexandru Vaida Voevod, Miron Cristea and Liviu Rebreanu.
