Barajul Negovanu

Negovanu Dam (also known as the Gâtul Berbecului Dam) is the first arch dam built in Romania. Completed in 1956, it is located on the upper course of the Sadu River, in the Gâtul Berbecului gorge in the Cindrel Mountains, Sibiu County.

Historical premise: It is a masterpiece of Romanian engineering from the 1950s, built from 50,000 m³ of reinforced concrete. Dimensions: It is 62 meters high. Angle and structure: The curved structure has an angle at the center of approximately 110 degrees. Altitude: The crown is at 1,158 meters above sea level, placing it in 5th place among the highest dams in the country.

The dam holds back the waters of Lake Negovanu (or Lake Sadului), an artificial lake spread over 72 hectares that stores a volume of about 6.3 million m³ of water. The water resource is used directly by the Sadu V hydroelectric power plant (capacity of 15.4 MW) for the production of electricity. This is part of a complex system of 5 hydroelectric power plants in the Sadu Valley. The Sadu River also has major historical importance, hosting the first hydroelectric power plant in the country (Sadu I, built in 1896).
