The ruins of the Rodnei Citadel are located at the foot of the Rodnei Mountains, on the upper course of Someșului Mare, in the commune of the same name. Currently, the Rodna Citadel is just a set of ruins that are not exploited for tourism to their true potential. Time has left deep traces on the fortress, so that today, only a few walls, which also require strengthening, still remind of the greatness of the former fortress.
The fortress was first documented in 1235, being known for the precious metal objects that were produced here. Over time, the fortress was rebuilt several times, the most significant modification taking place in the 16th century, during the reign of Petru Rareș.
The special natural landscape in which the fortress is located and the fresh mountain air invite visitors to discover part of the turbulent history of these places.

The Rodna Church is the only evidence of the medieval site attesting to the existence of a Romanesque church built in the late 12th and early 13th centuries.
In the middle of the 13th century, a church was built on the site of this basilica with two massive towers on the west side flanking the atrium, and access to the church with three naves was through the portal attached to the ruins of the southern tower.
Today, only the choir remains from this church, which, from 1812, was transformed into a Greek-Catholic church. The current church is dedicated to "St. Great Martyr George".
