Lake Mangalia is found at the southern edge of the town, close to the border with Bulgaria, constituting an authentic maritime port where its characteristics are best preserved, being invaded by marine species. With a relatively small width (0.3 - 0.8 km) compared to the total length of 9.5 km, the lake has a winding contour with meanders and steep slopes.

The total area of Lake Mangalia is 261 hectares, with an average depth of 6 meters and a maximum depth of 13 meters.

Initially, the lake was separated from the sea by a coastal strip, but it has been significantly reduced today, thus facilitating a connection between the lake and the sea and the mixing of fresh and marine waters.
