Ghiolul Fortuna is one of the most extensive in the Danube Delta, having an almost circular configuration and an area exceeding 900 hectares; the bottom of the bed is less than -1 meter above sea level. Around the periphery of the hill lie vast areas covered with white or yellow water lilies, rushes and sometimes fragments of plaur.
Silence reigns above the water, being interrupted only by the flight of the many birds present in this region. Swans often glide gracefully on the mirror of the lake, and the view afforded by this painting, especially near dusk, is remarkably beautiful. Lake Fortuna connects to the Old Danube through the Crânjală gorge, where a 2-kilometer-long channel is bordered by willows with dense crowns that seem to come so close that they create the impression that they are crossing the 10-meter width of the channel.
