The statue of the soldier was erected to commemorate the Muscelian heroes who fell in the confrontations during the First World War.
Due to its strategic location, on the most direct route between Wallachia and Transylvania, Câmpulung and its surroundings became the scene of fierce battles in 1916, during which Romanian troops fought against enemy forces trying to enter Bucharest through the Rucăr - Bran pass. The airstrikes caused significant loss of life and the destruction of many houses, prompting the evacuation of a large part of the city's population.
