On June 29, 1916, a dedication ceremony was held for the Independence Monument, initiated by a local committee and funded by subscriptions. Made of stone and bronze by the sculptor Oscar Späethe, this monument symbolizes a doroban and a woman holding the flag, thus representing the motherland.

The plinth features a bas-relief depicting the Doroban attack at Grivița, while another plaque contains engraved names of 244 heroes from Putna who fell in the last confrontation with the Ottoman forces, in the war for independence of 1877.
