Located in the center of the city, the Union Monument is placed on the border that separated the two regions of the old city (Focșanii Muntenia and Focșanii Moldovei), before their union on July 10, 1862. At that time, ruler Alexandru Ioan Cuza signed the decree of unification of the two parts of the city of Focșani. (Art. 2: "Both parts of the city beyond Milcov will form a single city in the future, which will be the seat of Putna county" - Official Gazette no. 149/July 1862)

Inaugurated on January 24, 1976, the monument is composed of an obelisk placed on a cylindrical pedestal, which illustrates the hour of union made by ruler Alexandru Ioan Cuza, in a bronze bas-relief - the creation of the sculptor Ion Jalea (1887-1983).

In the foreground is the ruler Alexandru Ioan Cuza, together with his main collaborators (Mihail Kogălniceanu, Costache Negri, Vasile Boerescu, etc.), among whom is the well-known peasant Ion Roată (deputy for Putna and important participant in the ad hoc divans) .

On the facade of the obelisk is fixed a shield-shaped bronze plate, on which is inscribed "Union of the Romanian Principalities, 1859".
