At the entrance to the town of Predeal, on the right side of the road coming from Brașov, we find the monument dedicated to the poet Mihail Săulescu, who heroically fell in this place in 1916.
Created by the sculptor Oscar Han, the work was unveiled on September 4, 1930, in a ceremony attended by personalities such as Cincinat Pavelescu, the president of the Society of Romanian Writers, Tudor Arghezi, Liviu Rebreanu, Ion Minulescu, Camil Petrescu, Jean Bart, I. A. Bassarabescu, Mihail Sorbul, Perpessicius, Eugen Jebeleanu, Sergiu Dan, Corneliu Moldovanu, representatives of the Ministry of Public Instruction and the local mountain hunters battalion.
Liviu Rebreanu, director of the Ministry of Public Instruction, and Horia Teculescu, representative of Astra, gave speeches at the ceremony.
On the plinth of the monument is the inscription: Poetul erou Mihail Săulescu. Society of Romanian Writers.
Mihail Săulescu, born in Bucharest on February 23, 1888, began his career as a poet at the age of 16, debuting with the volume Versuri (1906). At the age of 25, he wrote the drama Saptămâna luminăta. He was a substitute teacher, a custodian at the Socec library and an official at the Ministry of Public Instruction. From 1909 he was a member of the Convorbiri Critice circle.
Active in the editorial offices of the magazines Luceafărul and Rampa, contributing to publications such as Semănătorul (1906-1909), Convorbiri criticale (1909), Literary and artistic Falanga (1910), Ramuri (1910-1913), Junimea literără (1911), Luceafărul (1911- 1912), New Romanian magazine (1913-1914), Noi pagini literare (1914), Universul literar (1914), Facla (1914) and numerous other literary magazines. He dies before the release of the Cult of the Dead volume, which remains in the manuscript stage.
