From the top of a hill, we meet the equestrian statue of the Russian general Suvorov, a creation of the sculptor Marius Butunoiu.
Here, on the banks of the Râmnic river, Russian and Austrian troops achieved a significant victory against the Turks in 1789. In this battle, Romanian volunteers also played an important role. The event became known in world history as the Battle of Focșani and was popularized through numerous engravings and lithographs from the 18th century.
The Russian general Alexander Vasilievich Suvorov (1729-1800) distinguished himself during the Russo-Turkish conflicts. In 1799, he was the supreme commander of the troops that faced Napoleon, achieving notable successes in the Italian and Swiss campaigns.
