It was built in 1888 by a Munich sawmill owner, Louis Ortieb, to transport wood from the forest to the sawmill.
In 1909, the line was taken over from the church fund, which changed the gauge from 800 mm to 760 mm. Initially, the route was 23.9 km, from Moldovita to Rososa, but over the years it was extended to 73 km.
The line was used for timber transport until 2001.
Since 2005, the line is managed by the Association for the Preservation of the Narrow Lines in Romania. Currently, the line is 12 km long.
