The church is located near the Central University Library and was built between 1852-1858, through the efforts of priest Constantin Pavelescu and epitrop Dumitru Burduja. Contrary to some information, it cannot be the foundation of Costache Conachi, because he lived between 1778-1849, before the construction of the church. Contributions from parishioners and the Hulubei and Tăutu families allowed the purchase of the iconostasis (1858) and the pews. Between 1957-1962, with interruptions, the painters Nicolae Stoica and Vasile Robea painted the church. Among the heritage objects are two Gospels printed at the Neamț monastery in 1821 and an icon of St. Hierarch Nicholas, silver locket, dated April 15, 1861.
Although it was renovated in 1932, a bomb dropped on the night of June 5-6, 1944 caused damage that required repairs between 1945-1946. The earthquake of March 4, 1977 affected the building again, requiring reinforcement of the domes, and in 1993 work was carried out on the spire.
On the site of the current church, there was a wooden church built in 1730, dedicated to "St. Voievoz". Right next to the current altar is a stone cross that marks the site of the old Holy Table. The church was also known as "Prepodobna" (in Slavonic "Prea Kuvioasă"), "St. Vineri" and "Vinerea Mare". In the past, part of the guild of chalices worshipped here, and the other at the Banu church. Two tombstones are preserved in the churchyard: those of priest Constantin Pavelescu (1812-1870) and of the Buzdugan family — the commissioner Vasile (d. 1840), his wife Ecaterina (d. 1851) and their daughter Safta (d. 1870).
