The Babacaia Rock is a unique natural monument along the Danube, which is located next to Coronini, Caraş-Severin county. The rock has a height of seven meters above the water and is also known as the "Lonely Crag of the Danube".
The rock has witnessed important events throughout history. In the medieval period, chains from two fortresses, Golubac and Ladislau, were tied to it to prevent ships from passing through the Danube Gorge without paying customs duties.
Many legends have been woven around the rock. One of them says that a Serbian voivode tied his unfaithful wife to a rock, shouting "babo kaji", meaning "wife, repent". This is where the name of the rock would come from. Another legend says that a young Christian fell in love with a beautiful cauldron of the Golubac pasha. The young man kidnapped the cauldron and took her to the fortress of Coronini. But the pasha found out about the kidnapping and sent an army to punish the two lovers. The young man and the cauldron were tied to the rock and left to die of hunger and thirst. Allah, taking pity on their torment, turned them into stone huts.
Today, the Babacaia Rock is an important tourist attraction in the Danube Gorge. Tourists can admire the rock from the boat or from a nearby pontoon.
