The monastery was established in 1992. In the initial phase, a small building with a few cells was built, and in 1992 the foundation stone for the construction of the church was laid. On April 23, 1994, the first liturgy was celebrated in the main church.

Located at the confluence of the Orlățel and Cibin rivers, at a distance of 16 km from Sibiu, Orlatul is one of the oldest municipalities in the Mărginimi area and was first mentioned in documents in 1317.

Among the notable tourist attractions of this locality, the ruins of a medieval defense fortress, Castrum Salgo, built in 1332, stand out on the evocative peak called Dealul Zidul, at an altitude of 612 m, dominating the village in the northwest direction.

In this village, the novelist Liviu Rebreanu spent several summers, where he wrote part of his famous novel "Ion" as well as "Ciuleandra". Also, the writer Ion Agârbiceanu lived in Orlat for several years, and Ion Pop Reteganul worked as a teacher, advocating for the rights of the peasants.
