Located on the outskirts of Bușteni, at the foot of Mount Caraiman, between a meadow surrounded by tall fir trees, Caraiman Monastery was founded in 1998 by the pious Father Gherontie Puiu.
This location is not accidental because the father, being very ill, on the hospital bed, received in a dream from the Mother of God clear indications about the place where he would build, starting with 1998, the monastery of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross: near a six-branched tree, near a running water, on a plateau where the great cross can be seen.
Two years after the start of the works on June 29, 2000, The Patriarch Teoctist signs the establishment of the Caraiman Hermitage. From this moment, the hermitage, through the zeal of Father Gerontie, managed, in various stages to build the wooden church dedicated to the Shroud of the Mother of God, an baptistery, cells, bell tower and refectory, then the bodies of the archon and in autumn 2007 began building cells. On July 1, 2018, the hermitage is elevated to the rank of a monastery.
On September 14, 2014, less than four months after the passing of the pious Father Gherontie, on the occasion of the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, the great church was consecrated during a service officiated by The Patriarch Daniel.
