Săpânta-Peri Monastery houses the tallest wooden church in Europe, with an impressive height of 78 meters. The construction, completed between 1998 and 2003, integrated traditional elements of Maramuresian architecture.

About the history of the monastery, there are two distinct stages: one from the vague historical past, dating from 1391, when the descendants of Dragoș Vodă donated land for the construction of a monastery called Peri, and another from the present, with the current Săpânța-Peri Monastery, established in 1997 in near the town of Săpânta.

The current monastery was built with over 400 cubic meters of wood, mainly oak from the local forest, and is possibly the tallest wooden church in the world at 78 meters high. The church is decorated with gold, including a cross covered with 4 kg of gold and plated with 8.5 kg of gold.
