The Church of Saint George, an integral part of the history of Moldova, was built between 1761 and 1769, at the initiative and under the patronage of the Metropolitan of Moldova, Gavriil Calimachi. For more than a hundred years, this church served as a metropolitan cathedral, a function it retained until the construction of the new cathedral founded by Metropolitans Veniamin and Iosif Naniescu.

For this reason, the place of worship remained known as the "Old Metropolis". Architecturally, the Church of Saint George belongs to the Constantinopolitan Baroque style, a style that continues to impress today. Inside, the iconostasis attracts attention with its beauty, being made of lime wood covered with stucco, a true work of art.

Starting with 1999, the church underwent an extensive restoration and rehabilitation process. The renovation works included painting the interior in a neo-Byzantine style, while also adding a mosaic in the narthex that evokes a special event: the bringing of the relics of Saint Andrew to Iași in 1996.
