It is a mountain range that emerges from the southern peak of the Făgăraș Mountains. It is located between the valleys of the Topolog River, to the west, and the Argeș River, to the east. From a geological point of view, the range is mainly composed of sandstone-marly flysch, sandstone and schist.

Along its main axis, the range presents ocular gneiss formations, which contribute to the creation of a spectacular relief. The landscape is marked by prominences, imposing vertical walls and the presence of small caves, which increase the charm of the place.

At the southern edge of the range, Eocene sedimentary deposits predominate, and in this area the relief softens, taking on a smoother shape. Thus, a meridional terrace is outlined that completes the mountain landscape.

The maximum altitude of this range reaches 1,534 meters. Its surface is mostly covered by deciduous forests, of which the most widespread are beech and hornbeam.
