The mountain range is located in the western part of the Apuseni Mountains, bordered to the north-northeast by the Beiuș Depression, to the east-southeast by the Bihor Mountains, to the southeast by the Brad Depression, to the south and southwest by the Crișul Alb River, and to the northwest by the Codru-Moma Hills.

Its maximum altitude is 1,112 meters, at the top of Pleşu. The formation is composed in the eastern area of hard Jurassic and Triassic limestones, which favored the appearance of karst phenomena such as gorges, sinkholes, poles, plateaus and mounds. The western part is made up of crystalline schists and rhyolites, and the southern area of volcanic rocks.

The relief is marked by a narrow and long ridge, oriented in the northwest-southeast direction, from which two important branches start: one to the north-northwest, where the peaks Pleşu and Bălăteasa (927 m) stand out, and another to the south-southeast, with a plateau appearance, known as Moma, dominated by the peak Momuța (930 m).

There are marble and compact ornamental limestone quarries in the region, especially in the areas of Vascău and Moneasa. The massif is well forested and is also known as the Codrului Mountains.
