Munții Ciomatu

A small volcanic massif, representing an extinct and well-preserved volcanic cone, is located in the southeastern part of the Harghita Mountains (Eastern Carpathians). It is found on the left bank of the Olt River, near the Tușnad gorge, and is made up of andesitic and pyroclastic rocks. Its maximum altitude reaches 1,301 meters.

Inside the explosive crater of the volcanic cone is Lake Sfânta Ana, the only lake of volcanic origin in Romania. Approximately one kilometer northeast of the lake lies the Mohoș mudflat, also known as the "Mushy Lake", with an area of ​​40 hectares, a former volcanic lake gradually transformed into a swamp.

The Puciosu massif, also known as Ciomatu Mare or Ciumatu Mare, is covered with coniferous and deciduous forests, including spruce, fir, pine and beech. The area is part of a complex nature reserve, which includes speleological, floristic and faunal objectives. There are five caves here with an internal atmosphere rich in hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide.

The reserve is a habitat for numerous plant species specific to marshy areas, including rare species. Due to its landscape and natural value, the area is frequented by tourists.
