In Poiana Stampei commune, 17 km from Vatra Dornei, there is a beautiful tinov located at the confluence of the Dorna and Dornișoara rivers, at an altitude of 910 m and occupying an area of approximately 677.10 ha. It is the largest peat reserve in our country and is formed by a large layer of moss (Sphagnum Wulffianum). It is guarded by the hills of Căsoi, Grăzii, Ciungii, Chiperanilor and Smizii. The central area of the reserve is dominated by pine (Pinus sylvestris f. turbosa), and towards the edges there are spruces and other tree species such as spruce, birch, white alder and aspen.
The lower floor of the bog consists of a dense layer of Sphagnum moss, including glacial relict species. The flora also includes plants such as sedge, buttercup, blueberry and skydew, along with species of the genera Orchis and Carex. Research has identified glacial relicts and valuable endemic algae.
Tinovul also harbors a diverse fauna, including arctic and northern relict species, endemics and glacial elements such as rotifers and the tardigrade Microbiotus dobius, alongside lepidoptera new to the country's fauna. By visiting this pond, one can admire the beauty and color of plants and insects, in a typical biocenosis of an oligotrophic swamp, declared a monument of nature.
The mud from Poiana Stampei is used in spa treatments, being recognized for its therapeutic properties. The reserve is also home to a number of rare and protected plants, including the Sky Dew, a carnivorous plant declared a natural monument.
