The village of Sângeorgiu de Mureş is located approximately 5 kilometers northeast of the city of Târgu Mureş, along the national road DN 15 leading to Reghin. At the exit of the village, in the direction of Târgu Mureş, there is the park called “Mariaffy Lajos”, named in honor of a Hungarian nobleman who restored the nearby castle, which is now in ruins.
The castle had a vast property, and there was also a dendrological park on this area. From what remains of that park, which has been divided several times over time, a very old oak tree can be found.
Access to the park is from the top of a modest hill, from where you can see, to the southwest, the city of Târgu Mureş, located on the horizon, exactly opposite the “Sfântu Gheorghe” secondary school in the village. At the entrance there is an information panel containing an old map of the region.
After entering the park and looking back, and then walking about 60 meters, on the left side of the alley, among other trees, you can see the sought-after oak tree, hidden among the vegetation.
A small sign indicates the species of the tree and its age. The tree is truly impressive, with a trunk with a large diameter. The trunk maintains its thickness for a considerable height before branching. Higher up, on its stem, you can see an area covered with moss.
