In the village of Colțești, on a promontory on the right side of the Aiudului valley, you can still see the ruins of a medieval noble fortress.
The fortress was purposely built on a steep rocky peak after the Tatar invasion of 1241, which severely affected the villages of Trascău and Sângiorgiu.
The inscription on the northern tower (about 20 m high) mentions the Thorotzkay family as the builders of the fortress in the 13th century.
A stone plaque contains an inscription translated from Hungarian: "Fortress of the Thorotzkay family. Built by Thorotzkay Illés, vice-voivode of Transylvania, at the end of the 13th century. Burned by General Tiege's troops in 1703. This panel was executed in 1832. "
The fortress was confiscated by King Matia Corvin in 1470 and given to the voivode of Transylvania.
It returned to the Thorotzkay family in 1510, but was devastated by the peasants led by Gheorghe Doja in 1514.
The Thorotzkay family opposed the annexation of Transylvania by the Habsburgs, suffering serious consequences: the destruction of the fortress by Austrian troops in 1703.
A good part of the enclosure walls and the two side towers can still be seen.
A similar fortification, built on the Rîmeți hill about 4 km away, now has only vague traces.
Both fortifications were intended to supervise and defend the local population and the trade route in the area against migratory attacks.
