Motru is a river in southwestern Romania, which flows into the right bank of the Jiu River, in the territory of Butoieşti commune in Mehedinţi county. The river is approximately 120 kilometers long and has a watershed with an area of 1,900 square kilometers.
The source of the river is located in the southwestern area of the Vâlcan Mountains, below Oslea peak, at an altitude of 1,230 meters. Along its course, the river initially crosses a region formed by crystalline schists and granites, separating the Vâlcan Mountains from the Mehedinţi Mountains. Then it enters the limestone area of the Mehedinţi Plateau, after which it delimits the Coşuşte Piedmont from the Jiu Hills. The river passes through the municipality of Motru, then through the town of Strehaia and crosses the largest coal basin in Oltenia.
The average annual flow of the Motru River is 14.3 cubic meters per second. Its main tributaries include the Motru Sec, Coşuştea and Huşnita.
