The Moldova River is a tributary of the Siret River, downstream from the city of Roman. It is 216 km long and has a drainage basin covering an area of 4,326 km². Its source is in the northeastern area of the Obcina Mestecăniș, at the foot of the Lucina peak, at an altitude of 1,250 m. In the first part of its route, the river flows through the flysch formations of a wide north-south corridor, which delimits the Obcina Mestecăniș (to the west) from the Obcina Feredeu (to the east). After passing the commune of Fundu Moldovei in Suceava County, it changes direction to the east and crosses the Paleogene flysch perpendicularly, up to the area of the city of Gura Humorului. On this segment, the average drainage slope is 10.1‰.
Further, after passing through Gura Humorului, the Moldova River becomes a dividing line between the Subcarpathian area and the Suceava Plateau, heading in a general northwest-southeast direction. On this section, the slope decreases slightly, which leads to the emergence of an area with accentuated riverbed dynamics, until it flows into the Siret River. In this sector, the river forms a wide valley, characterized by multiple branches and small water collection areas.
Among the main tributaries of the Moldova River are: Moldovița, Suha, Humor, Râșca, Neamț (also known as Ozana) and Topolița.
