The Făgăraş Piedmont is one of the most important natural bird protection areas in Romania, having a large area and housing 25 protected species. The area offers ideal natural conditions for these species.
This region lies in the Făgăraş Depression and is located in the counties of Brașov and Sibiu, on the northern side of the Făgăraș Mountains.
The dominant relief includes hills and mountains, due to the location in the alpine and continental regions. Habitats are varied, including grasslands, hayfields, deciduous and coniferous forests, arable land, vineyards and orchards. The flora is extremely diverse, with over 900 species of plants, of which about 450 are found in the wet meadows.
The area at the foot of the Făgăraş Mountains provides ideal habitats for many bird species of world importance, such as the lesser screaming eagle, the field grouse, woodpeckers, the peregrine falcon, the mountain grouse and the black stork.
To protect these species in the long term, it is essential to preserve the habitats where the birds nest, raise their young and feed.
