The reserve is located in the town of Borșa, at the meeting point between Valea Fântâna and Cimpoiasa, with an area of 50 hectares and an average altitude of 1500 meters.

The landforms in this erosion zone are modeled in crystalline limestones, having a structural plateau with internal and external karst phenomena (such as avenues – Avenul Podul Cailor at -128 m, caves and slates).

In this area there is a varied vegetation, from deciduous forest to subalpine and alpine, including many rare species such as: pigeon gorse (*Silene nivalis*), fescue (*Festuca porcii*), mountain bell ( *Campanula carpatica*), gorse (*Veronica baumgartenii*), gentian (*Gentiana lutea*), bear's honey (*Pulmonaria filarskyana*), cornflower (*Leontopodium alpinum*) and sedge (*Rhododendron kotschyi*).
