The Hătăș Canton Forest became a nature reserve according to Government Decision no. 2151/2004, which established new natural protected areas and is of particular importance as a floristic genetic background, a refuge for animals specific to wetlands, as well as a passage area for many species of migratory birds.
Geographically, the Hătăș Canton Forest is located in a forest managed by the Fetești Forestry, being bordered to the north, northeast and south by the Danube, and to the west by the dyke that protects Balta Borcea.
The reserve occupies an area of 6.4 hectares, located on the territory of Stelnica commune, in Ialomița county. The reservation is particularly important for the protection of some specimens of the Brumăriu oak (Quercus pedunculiflora), which are between 150 and 300 years old. Other tree species found in the reserve include pedunculate oak (Quercus robur), white poplar (Populus alba), black poplar (Populus nigra), willow (Salix tiandra) and elm (Ulmus foliacea).
