Ostrovul Mare, located in Teleorman county, on the administrative territory of Islaz commune, is a real natural treasure. This island, declared a protected area of national interest, is a refuge for an impressive variety of plants and animals, being an example of a well-preserved river ecosystem. The 140 ha nature reserve has been designated for the protection of birds and their habitats, especially the pygmy cormorants (Phalacrocorax pygmeus) that nest in the white and black poplars on the island.

The formation of Ostrovului Mare is closely related to the dynamics of the Danube River. Over time, the meandering and shifting river beds have helped create this unique island with a complex geography and remarkable biodiversity.

An impressive biological diversity
* Vegetation: The island is home to wetland vegetation, with meadow forests, reed beds and floodplain meadows. Tree species such as willows, poplars and oaks intertwine with the grassy vegetation, creating a wonderful landscape.
* Avian: Many species of birds have their habitat here, some of them being protected at European level. Herons, egrets, little corcodella and wild ducks are just some of the species that can be seen in this area.
* Fish: In the waters around the island live a variety of fish species, adapted to the specific conditions of a river ecosystem.
