The Hergheliei swamp, also known as "Balta Mangalia" or "Balta Saturn", is a natural reserve of mixed type, located in Constanța county, on the territory of the city of Mangalia. It is classified as a protected area of national interest, according to IUCN category IV.
The protected area is located in the south of Dobrogea, in the southeastern part of Constanța county, near the Saturn and Venus resorts. It is located next to the national road DN39, which connects Mangalia to Eforie.
The reservation was declared a protected area based on Government Decision No. 2151 of 2004 and occupies an area of 98 hectares. It was published in the Official Gazette in 2005, as part of a set of new protected areas in Romania.
The bog includes a wetland area composed of ponds, eutrophic bogs, peat bogs, sulfur springs and specific vegetation such as reeds. It harbors a diversity of flora, including halophilous and hygrophilous species, and provides an ideal habitat for birds.
The reserve is also important because of the migratory birds that stop here, including winter swan, white stork, little white egret, woodpecker, red-breasted goose and common pelican. This is part of the Natura 2000 site, which also includes Movilei Cave.
