The basalt microcanyon of Hoghiz, designated a natural monument, is a protected area of national interest, classified as IUCN category III, i.e. a nature reserve with geological specificity. It is located in Brașov County, in the commune of Hoghiz.
This natural area, which covers an area of 2 hectares, is located in the Hoghiz Depression, in an area where the Persian Mountains meet the Transylvanian Basin. The reserve is located near the entrance to the Bogății Forest, in the northeastern part of Brașov County and southeast of the village of Hoghiz, being located near the national road DN13 that connects the municipality of Brașov and the city of Sighișoara.
The status of protected area was granted by Law No. 5 of March 6, 2000, a law subsequently published in the Official Gazette of Romania, No. 152 of April 12, 2000. This law concerned the approval of the National Land Management Plan – Section III, dedicated to protected areas. The reserve preserves a special relief, made up of basalt formations that constitute a small canyon located in the Hoghiz Valley. This landscape was formed as a result of powerful volcanic eruptions that took place in the Persian Mountains, during the Quaternary, the last geological era in the evolution of the planet.
