Pângărați Lake is a reservoir created for hydroelectric purposes, which was formed in 1964 by flooding an area on the middle course of the Bistrița River. It is located between the Stânișoara Mountains, to the north, and the Goșmanu-Geamăna Peak of the Tarcău Mountains, to the south, at an altitude of 371 meters, in the commune of the same name in Neamț County.

The lake is 3,700 meters long, 730 meters wide, has a volume of 6.75 million cubic meters and a maximum depth of 14 meters. The accumulated water is used to power the turbines of the “Dimitrie Leonida” hydroelectric power plant, with a capacity of 23 MW, which also began operating in 1964.

The Pângărați Lake area and its surroundings were declared a nature reserve in the same year, and on November 30, 2004 they were included in the category of natural areas of special protection for birds. This protected area covers an area of 153 hectares.

Numerous species of aquatic birds live and breed in this reserve, which find a favorable habitat for feeding and nesting here. Among these species are the little egret (Egretta garzetta), the whooper swan (Cygnus cygnus), the little grebe (Tachybaptus ruficollis), the gadwall (Anas querquedula), the mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) and the moorhen (Aythya fuligula), along with other species.
