Starting from Slobozia, near the road are several salt lakes known for their therapeutic mud. Amara (150 ha) is the most famous of these lakes, its name deriving from the bitter taste of the water.
As early as 1888, the French chemist Bertrand, during the analysis of the therapeutic properties of the mud from Amara and impressed by its special qualities and the large amount of mud, named his report "Mud for Europe".
The tourist center developed around Lake Amara has recently become part of the "family of great spa resorts in Romania by building large sanatorium complexes here.
Lake Amara provides first-class natural spa treatment factors, such as high-quality sapropelic mud, mineral lake water containing sodium chloride, magnesium, sulfur, and the dry steppe climate - an essential mineral element for internal therapy.
The Amara resort enjoys favorable climatic conditions for balneo-tourist activities, recording over 1500 hours of sunshine in the tourist season, with clear days prevailing (135-140 days). The average monthly temperatures are high, being between 21-23°, and the maximum values oscillate between 40-44° C, with low amounts of precipitation (30-40 mm/monthly and 450-480 mm/year).
The resort offers facilities such as hot baths with mineral water from the lake, hot mud applications, cold baths and mud anointments, heliotherapy and physiotherapy. For relaxation, tourists benefit from a beautiful park of 38 hectares or plantations of trees and shrubs surrounded by meadows, located on the shore of the lake.
Over time, the Amara Resort has expanded by building new and modern accommodation facilities and spa facilities. A significant contribution to the fame of the resort is the medicine PALL-AMAR, a valuable extract from the active substance of mud.
PALL-AMAR comes from two words: Peloid, meaning "of the mud family", and Amara, the name of the place where the mud comes from. The Romanian doctor Ionescu-Călinești, former doctor of the Amara baths for 20 years, is the discoverer of this important medicine, which he developed during the same period of time he served at the resort.
