The underwater sulphurous springs of Mangalia form a site of community importance (SCI), designated for the protection of biodiversity and maintaining in a favorable conservation state the wild flora and fauna, as well as the natural habitats of community interest in the protected area.
It is located in the southeastern part of Romania, on the territory of Constanța county.
The natural area is located at the southeastern end of Constanța county, in the eastern part of the port of Mangalia, close to the national road DN39, which connects the town of Eforie with Mangalia.
The site was declared of community importance by Order of the Ministry of the Environment and Sustainable Development No. 1964 of December 13, 2007, regarding the establishment of the protected natural area regime within the European Natura 2000 network in Romania, and covers an area of 382 hectares.
The protected area includes sandy areas and underwater cliffs of the Black Sea, being part of the Pontic bioregion, near the port of Mangalia, and is home to a diversity of marine vegetation and fauna.
The site has been designated for the conservation of habitats of community interest such as inundated sandbars, reefs and sandbars and inundated marshes at low tide, also protecting species such as Zostera noltii (seagrass) and communities of algae Cystoseira barbata.
Other species of marine flora and fauna observed in the area include sea grass (Zostera noltii, IUCN Red List species) and algae (green and red) such as Cladophora vagabunda, Ceramium rubrum and Cystoseira sp.
The fauna includes fish such as govid (Gobius cobitis) and sand govid (Pomatoschistus minutus), crabs of species such as Diogenes pugilator and Eriphia verrucosa, molluscs such as Solen marginatus and clams of the species Paphia aurea.
