The Miheșu de Câmpie – Tăureni Ponds are a protected area with the status of a special protection area for birds, located in the central part of the Transylvania region, within Mureș County.


This natural area is located in the western part of Mureș County, near the border with Cluj County, in the vicinity of the county road DJ151 that connects the localities of Roșiori and Zăpodea. The area of ​​the site extends over the administrative territories of several communes: Șăulia, Miheșu de Câmpie, Pogăceaua, Sânger, Tăureni, Valea Largă and Zau de Câmpie. The geographical center of the Miheșu de Câmpie – Tăureni Ponds site is located at the coordinates 46.653533 degrees north latitude and 24.200094 degrees east longitude.


This area was officially recognized as a Special Bird Protection Area by Government Decision no. 1284 of October 24, 2007. The decision was part of the process of integrating the bird protection areas in Romania into the European ecological network Natura 2000. The total surface area of ​​this protected area is 1186.5 hectares.


Located in the continental bioregion, the protected area includes a diversity of natural habitats in the Sărmaș Valley meadow, such as rivers, lakes, swamps, peatlands, agricultural lands, pastures and deciduous forests. These ecosystems provide favorable conditions for feeding, nesting and living for numerous bird species, whether migratory, passing or sedentary, some of which benefit from legal protection.


Several species of birds can be found in this area, including the blue gull (Alcedo atthis), the whistling duck (Anas penelope), the mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), the pied duck (Anas strepera), the grey heron (Ardea cinerea), the red heron (Ardea purpurea), the chestnut-headed duck (Aythya ferina), the mottled duck (Aythya fuligula), the red-breasted bittern (Botaurus stellaris), the red-breasted goose (Branta ruficollis), the common wagtail (Bucephala clangula), the white stork (Ciconia ciconia), the black stork (Ciconia nigra), the black wagtail (Chlidonias niger), the white-cheeked wagtail (Chlidonias hybridus), the reed warbler (Circus aeruginosus), the blue heron (Circus cyaneus), the night heron (Nycticorax nycticorax), the lapwing (Vanellus vanellus) and the little lapwing (Tachybaptus ruficollis).
