Brațul Borcea is a protected area, classified as a Special Avifaunistic Protection Area (SPA), located in the south-east of Romania, on the territory of Călăraşi and Ialomița counties.
This natural area is located in the southeastern extremity of Ialomița county and in the northeastern part of Călărași county, near the national road DN3B, which connects the cities of Călărași and Fetești.
The area was declared a Special Avifaunistic Protection Area by a Government Decision from 2007, being part of the Natura 2000 network in Romania. The protected area covers an area of 13,097 hectares and is recognized as a wetland of international importance by the Ramsar Convention in February 2013.
This natural area, located in a steppe bioregion, comprises diverse habitats such as steppes, lakes, marshes, deciduous forests and natural grasslands. It provides ideal conditions for feeding, nesting and living of many migratory, migratory or sedentary bird species, some of which are protected by law.
Bird species seen in this area include the short-legged tern, skylark, grebe, nightingale, gray and red heron, woodcock, white and black stork, mallard, common pelican, shoveler, little egret, as well as many others, including rare or protected species such as red-breasted goose and red duck.
