Suhaia is a protected area located in Teleorman county, on the territories of Lisa and Suhaia communes. It was declared a Special Bird Protection Area in 2007 and covers 4,473 hectares, including the Balta Suhaia nature reserve. Since 2012, the site has been protected under the Ramsar Convention as a Wetland of International Importance, protecting vulnerable species such as the curly pelican and the gypsy.
The area is characterized by a diversity of natural habitats (lakes, rivers, marshes, meadows) that provide food and nesting conditions for many bird species, both migratory and sedentary. Among the birds found here are the curly pelican, various species of grebes, ducks, herons, geese, woodcock, coot, puffin, hawk, gulls and many others, some of which are protected by law.
