St. John's Church is the oldest church in the city, built in 1661 by Gr. Ghica as a monastery for monks and endowed with extensive properties. After being destroyed during the fire of 1854, it was rebuilt in 1871.
This church witnessed many significant events in the history of Romania. In 1821, the swearing-in ceremony of the Sacred Battalion of Eterist Youth, a unit formed to fight for the liberation of Greece from Ottoman rule, took place here.
On June 20, 1848, in front of this church, the inhabitants of Muntenia and Moldova celebrated June 11, 1848, which represented the beginning of the revolution in Bucharest.
