During the communist regime, the place was frequented by the believers of the United Romanian Church, who were deprived of their belongings. The clandestine bishop Ioan Ploscaru listened to the confessions of the faithful in this church, before the Lugoj Cathedral was returned in 1990.

Until 1980, the Roman Catholic priest of Lugoj was the Minorite monk Johann Laschober (1917-1980), mentioned by Nicolae Breban in the novel "Bunavestire". The last minority monk to serve in this church was priest Elmar Kroner, who died on December 9, 1991.
