The church known as "Flâmânda" or "Bride Church", dedicated to the "Assumption of the Virgin Mary", is located in the eastern part of the city of Câmpulung Muscel, on the Flâmânda hill, from which it derives its name. This place of worship is considered a blessed place, where visitors feel a closeness to God, but also a space where legends are not lacking.
The name Flâmânda is associated with a legend that refers to the era of Negru-Vodă, the founder of Wallachia. It is said that, having arrived on that hill, he would have lingered too long and would have run out of food, which is where the name of the place comes from.
The first construction of the church was carried out in 1765, at the initiative of the county administrator at the time, Dumitru Roseti, and was known as the "Mârculești Hermitage". According to those who preserved the oral history, the founding document of the hermitage, written by the founder himself, emphasizes the special religious role of this place. It was customary that on the day of the Ascension of the Lord, the abbot of the Câmpulung Monastery, accompanied by monks and ordained priests, would climb the Flânda Hill and hold a service intended to commemorate the moment of the Ascension of Jesus Christ from the Mount of Olives.
The current church on the Flânda Hill was built from scratch between 1938 and 1940, with the support of the philanthropist Gheorghe Ștefănescu. He built the church in memory of his only daughter, Margareta, who died on her wedding day, on the way to Câmpulung, near the town of Găești.
This holy place is said to have a special spiritual charge, and people believe that no couple who got married in this church has ever ended in divorce, being protected by the spirit of the bride.
Architecturally, the church on Dealul Flâmânda is considered a special monument, remarkable both for its location and its distinct style. Seen from a distance, it resembles a white silhouette carved from Albești stone.
