Golgotha from Şumuleu, known as "Jesus' Step", is the most famous outdoor Station of the Cross in the Transylvania region.
On the western side of the Șumuleul Mic hill, you can reach the Salvator chapel by following a path through the fir forest. Along the steep slope are the Stations of the Cross, which illustrate the sufferings of Jesus and are walked by many believers during the Pentecost Pilgrimage, accompanied by prayers. These stations symbolize the faith and sacrifice of a person or group.
The first written reference about Golgotha from Şumuleu dates from 1834. After 1868, the old wooden crosses were replaced by stone crosses, of which only a few still exist today.
The new station crosses were installed at the beginning of the 20th century and are made by the stone sculptor Kovács Béla from Jigodin.
