It is one of the oldest religious buildings in the Ciuc region. On the site of the current parish church dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul in Cioboteni (Csobotfalva), there was, about a thousand years ago, an Árpád church. It was rebuilt in Gothic style in the 15th century, and between 1800 and 1817 it was transformed into the current church with neo-Baroque architecture.

The new church was consecrated in 1817 by the Bishop of Transylvania, Sándor Rudnay, on Trinity Sunday. In 1911, the place went through a renovation process, being embellished with stained glass windows and paintings of artistic value. Under the arches, the high school teacher Károly Brassai created decorative paintings. The parish of Şumuleu Ciuc (Csíksomlyó) has a particularly beautiful and imposing church building, designed by Archpriest Lajos Bálint.

Between 2002 and 2005, archaeological excavations took place inside the church, carried out in several stages. These affected the current northern chapel and the northwestern part of the nave. As a result of the research, foundations from three different medieval periods were discovered and vestiges of an older stone church were identified. In 2013, an extensive general renovation process was initiated.

The parish church of St. Peter and Paul is one of the most important places for the religious ceremonies of Pentecost in Şumuleu Ciuc. On the night from Saturday to Sunday, hundreds of pilgrims – especially Csángás from Moldova – spend their time here in prayer. On Saturday afternoon, during the Pentecost holiday, a special service dedicated to the Csangos is held in the church, and their cross and flag are kept inside.
