Built of stone and with a height of over 21 meters above sea level, the Carol I Lighthouse was named after the first king of united Romania, Carol I. The king was also the initiator of the construction of Constanța Port and the infrastructure that connected Dobrogea with the rest of the country , contributing significantly to the rapid development of the region.
This symbol of Constanta is adorned with two effigies: one represents Emperor Trajan and the other King Charles I. Although the king's effigy was destroyed during the communist regime, it was restored and returned to its original place in 2002.
On the longer sides of the lighthouse, three plaques commemorate important historical events. They mark the inauguration of the Constanța Port by King Carol I in 1909 and the rehabilitation of the lighthouse on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of this event.
The Carol I Lighthouse was functional for over 50 years, from 1909 to 1961. Later, it ceased its activity, its role being taken over by the Landing Lighthouse, inaugurated in 1960, and the White Lighthouse, built in 1972.
