The name of the commune is associated with the vestiges, still visible in these areas, of one of the lines (wave of earth) erected by the Romans along the Dobrogea to protect against the increasingly frequent attacks of migratory peoples from the 2nd-3rd centuries AD.

The wave itself consists of three ditches with earth walls, sometimes bricked up, known as "Trajan's Wave". "Valul Mic", with the first parapet, has a height of 1-3 meters, sometimes reaching 7-10 m, and stretches along the ridges of the hills, diagonally cutting the river valleys. Higher observation mounds can still be seen today in places. The "Great Wave" of earth, 54 km long and 3-4 m high, can be seen from the train on the Constanța-Cernavodă Railway route. It included ditches dug on either side of the parapet and was fortified by 25 towers.

This structure also appears to be represented on Trajan's Column in Rome. The third wave is actually a stone construction, called limes scyticus, the border of Dacia.
