The Academic College, also known as the Casa Universitarilor, was built on the site of the oldest theater building in Transylvania. By the 1930s, the old building was in an advanced state of disrepair, which led to the decision to demolish it and replace it with a new building for various academic activities.

The building was built between 1934 and 1937, according to the plans of the architect George Cristinel, presenting flat surfaces and lacking ornaments, emanating an impression of monumentality specific to American architecture of the 20th century. An inner courtyard surrounded by arches divides the building into two distinct bodies.

At the time of the inauguration, King Charles II was present, and the building was named King Charles II College. In the 1940s, it was known as the King Matia Student House, and during the communist period, it was renamed the University House. Today, the official name of this building is the Academic College.
