The Afteia Monastery, located in Valea Pianului, offers a complete experience through its landscape, location and the people who live there, perfectly defining the idea of "monastery in the mountains". The access to the monastery by the road that climbs through the forest, the road shaded by trees and the settlement on a hilltop turns the journey into a blessing.
The 5 km road through the forest, along the Ghenea stream, can be traveled on foot or by car, offering a cool and peaceful atmosphere. At the end of this road, at over 600 m altitude, the Afteia monastery is revealed.
Afteia, also known as the Cioara monastery, belongs to the village of Mărgineni, Săliștea commune and has a history of over 600 years. The precise details of its past are unclear, but it is known to have been built in thanksgiving for the Christian victory over the Turks in 1479, destroyed in 1788 and rebuilt in 1798, with a history marked by periods of interruption.
Today, Afteia Monastery is a spiritual refuge and escape from everyday life, surrounded by cells, a wooden chapel and a new, larger and more welcoming church. The monastery courtyard offers a peaceful and restful place with mowed grass and stone paths.
The Afteia Monastery allows pilgrims to spend the night in the purpose-built building, a sign of brotherly love from the monks. It is recommended that you attend all service hours to fully benefit from this spiritual experience.
