The Youth Theatre is one of the prominent cultural institutions in Piatra Neamț, Neamț County, located in Piața Ștefan cel Mare, at number 1. Since 2017, the theatre has been managed by Gianina Cărbunariu, a director, playwright and writer originally from Piatra Neamț.
In 1881, thanks to the efforts of Gheorghe Liciu-Caia, the first theatre in Piatra Neamț was founded, later known as the "Romanian Theatre", then the "Roxy Theatre". It was located on the site where the Ștefan cel Mare Park is located today. During that period, the Fani-Tardini troupe from Galați (1876), the Pechea Alexandrescu troupe from Iași (1880) and, later, artists from the National Theatre in Bucharest, including Aristizza Romanescu and Iancu Brezeanu, performed on its stage.
The current Youth Theatre building was built between 1929 and 1947, the project being carried out by architect F.E. Droz, and the works were carried out by the contractor Carol Zane. The initiative for the construction of the "National Theatre in Piatra Neamț" belonged to some intellectuals and former mayors of the city: Petru Lalu, G. Măcărescu and N. Ioaniu. Other sources indicate that the works began in 1930, under the coordination of the architect Roger H. Bolomey, of Swiss origin, born in Broșteni, in collaboration with the same contractor, Carol Zane. The official inauguration of the building took place on October 24, 1942.
Initially, the building was put into use by auction to the Munca Cooperative, then to Moise Kanner, being used mainly for film screenings, under the name of the Trianon Cinema. In 1958, the interior of the building was redeveloped to serve its original purpose again, that of hosting theater performances, and in 1959 the first theatrical premieres began to be staged.
Also in 1958, a section of the Bacău State Theater was established in Piatra Neamț, formed by graduates of the Institute of Theater and Cinematography (IATC), the 1957 and 1958 promotions, among which were Leopoldina Bălănuță, Florin Piersic, Cosma Brașoveanu, Virgil Marsellos, Dumitru Chesa, Atena Zahariade, Ica Matache and Zoe Muscan. The first show presented was "The Wiles of Scapin" by Molière, directed by David Esrig, and took place on October 3, 1958. The cast included important names such as Leopoldina Bălănuță, Florin Piersic, Radu Voicescu, Cosma Brașoveanu, Dumitru Chesa, Gheorghe Popovici Poenaru, George Motoi, Atena Zahariade and Zoe Muscan.
By Decree no. 1434 of June 8, 1961, the Council of Ministers decided to establish the State Theatre of Piatra Neamț. Later, in 1967, the institution received its current name of Youth Theatre of Piatra Neamț.
