The museum in Agnita was established in 1958 by the museographer Erhard Andree, who collected documentary materials from the Hîrtibaciului Valley through archaeological research and donations. The first museum was opened in 1958 with an exhibition about the history of the center of Agnita and the surroundings. In 1961, the opening of the basic exhibition with historical and ethnographic themes took place, reflecting the evolution of society in the area from the Paleolithic to the present day.

The museum was moved to a baroque building in 1969, with several exhibition halls, warehouses, a library and an archive. The main exhibition presents objects chronologically, including artifacts from the Paleolithic, Neolithic, Bronze and Iron Age, Daco-Roman and Medieval cultures. Also on display are vestiges of ancient civilizations, such as a rhinoceros skull and a mammoth table.

The museum also houses documents and exhibits relevant to the feudal history of the area, as well as to the historical and cultural events of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. The collection of books, photographs and fine art complements the museum's heritage, which includes more than 6000 cultural assets, including ethnographic, archaeological, historical and artistic objects.

Among the exhibits, there is a special documentary and artistic value: the Guild Ballad from 1653, a large crucifix, the work attributed to Veit Stoss or his school, founded by his sons Johannes, Martinus and Vitus who lived in Sighisoara, Mediaș and Brașov, a flower worked in iron, 51 cm long, an iron and brass lock incised with ornamental motifs, four pairs of silver stitches, a wind flag.
