The Ialomița River has its source in the Bucegi Mountains and after gathering the waters of the Prahova River, its main tributary, flows from west to east through the most extensive plain in Romania.
The difference between the arid aspect of the plain, known as Bărăgan (where no trees can be found for tens of kilometers), and the 4-5 km wide meadows of the river has led some geographers to call Ialomita the Nile of Bărăgan.
